My ESC experience – Noran Arafa

Ciao! 🙂

I’m Noran, 22 years old, from Egypt. From September 2024 to June 2025, I volunteered at I.T.E.T. “Gaetano Salvemini” school. When I first arrived, I didn’t speak a word of Italian — but thanks to the kindness of the people around me and the tandem language exchange project, I slowly started to communicate and understand more every day.

During my time there, I created my personal project: a role-play economics activity designed to teach students basic economic concepts in a simple, interactive way. We learned through games, scenarios, and hands-on experiences — and it was so rewarding to see the students engage with something that is usually seen as complicated or boring.

This experience of volunteering truly changed the way I see life. It taught me how to accept cultural differences, adapt to new environments, and grow — not just as a volunteer, but as a person.

My advice for new volunteers:

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone — that’s where the change happens. You might feel lost at first (especially with the language!), but trust it you will learn quickly. Be open, enjoy your time and connect with people. Every little challenge will help you grow in ways you never expected. This experience it goes by faster than you think!
