From September 2024 to June 2025, I volunteered in an Italian Highschool in Molfetta. Getting to know the Italian school system was an interesting experience and the project itself broadened my horizon in many ways. My activities mostly revolved around non-formal-learning, meaning that I prepared some games for the English-Lessons or presented my culture to the students.
I formed amazing international friendships with the other volunteers, that will always have a special place in my heart, I had such nice and welcoming students, that motivated me throughout the project, I was able to travel to 20 different Italian cities during my time here and collected thousands of valuable memories.
I will not sugarcoat and tell you right now, that there were also some hard times. I shared the flat with 9 other people, which can obviously lead to some conflicts, the winter in Southern Italy was quite boring and a bit depressing (cause there‘s not much to do) and the homesickness really got to me sometimes. But because of the other volunteers and my mentor, I never felt alone or hopeless and I am so glad, that I stayed until the end.
My advice to the next volunteers
If I had to give the next volunteers an advice (or a few advices), I would tell you to always communicate openly, to be kind to yourself and others and to remember, why you chose this project. Make connections, get out of your comfort zone and of course: Work on your Italian!!!:)
